WELCOME TO TRYOUTS! Let’s walk through the process together.

STEP 1: Which tryout is the right tryout? The USAV age groups are described below. Please sign up for the proper age group and, if you'd like to apply to play on an older team, let us know. Players may ask (or be asked) to play "up" but they cannot play "down".

U13 age group: birthday on or after July 1, 2012
U14 age group: birthday between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012
U15 age group: birthday between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011
U16 age group: birthday between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010

STEP 2:  Every player who attends tryouts must have a current USA Volleyball membership. Our local region of USA Volleyball offers temporary memberships for this purpose (select the 'click here to purchase a membership' link on the right side of the page, then look for the 'Junior Tryout' membership). These memberships cost $20 and can be upgraded to a full season membership once your player is offered a spot on a team and you’ve accepted that offer.

  • If you are a new member and do not already have a SportsEngine account, the membership purchase process will direct you to create a SportsEngine account.
  • If you are a returning team member (from any USAV club) and already have a SportsEngine account, click the link above and use your SportsEngine account credentials to purchase this year's membership. Please do not create a new account. Use the same email as last year; if you forgot your password, you can reset it instantly.  If you forgot which email you used, the system will help you find your account.
  • If you are a returning team member (from any USAV club), already have a SportsEngine account, and are trying out in July, then you are all set. Your current membership is valid until August 31.
  • If you have questions about memberships, please contact us! We’ll be happy to help.

Once you have your membership, print or download a copy of the membership card. We will ask you for the membership ID number when you register, and we may need to scan the QR code on the membership card on the day of the tryout in order to confirm your eligibility.

STEP 3: Use this link to access our online registration form. Pre-registration is encouraged; our spots may fill up and we may not be able to accept walk-ups on the day of tryouts. Valley View Volleyball's registration fee is $30, which is payable at the time you register. We accept credit/debit cards, Zelle, cash and checks.

STEP 4: Our club handbook, which contains a summary of all our policies, is located here. Please take a look; if you have questions they may be answered inside.

STEP 5: Complete our player self-evaluation form and bring a printed copy with you to tryouts.

TRYOUT DAY HAS ARRIVED! What should you bring with you?

Please be sure to bring the following items:

  • A copy of your USA Volleyball membership card from above, either printed on paper or available on your mobile device via the SportsEngine app. We will scan the QR code on your card to confirm eligibility.
  • The completed player self-evaluation form.
  • Athletic clothing that you can move in: leggings, shorts, t-shirts, tennis shoes (closed-toed, gym-appropriate shoes are required)
  • Knee pads
  • Something to keep hair out of your face (braids, ponytails suggested)
  • A filled water bottle (a refill station is available in the gym)
  • A positive attitude! Try to relax; we know that tryouts can be a stressful time, but we’ll do all we can to make it less stressful and more fun!

WHAT HAPPENS THEN?

Please note that tryouts are held in a "closed gym"; no spectators are permitted.

A parent’s meeting will be convened outside the gym entrance shortly after the start of the tryout session. Club employees and board members will be available to describe our club philosophy, expectations, a high-level schedule, etc. We’ll also be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Meanwhile, in the gym, players will be evaluated on their playing skills as well as other intangibles such as coachability, attitude and leadership using the evaluation criteria located here. At the conclusion of the tryout session, one of three things will happen:

  • The player will receive a Letter of Commitment before leaving the gym. This LOC, valid for 48 hours, is the club’s commitment that the player will have a spot if they choose to accept. You will be asked to sign and return the form within those 48 hours (although, of course, you’re also welcome to sign on the spot!)
  • The player will be offered a place on a waitlist.
  • The player will not be offered a position. In this case, feedback on where the player may improve will be offered; our staff will also be happy to assist in more detail to help the player prepare for future tryouts.

We usually fill all team and waitlist positions on the day of the tryout; however, in some years we may opt to hold a supplemental tryout shortly after the first to fill any remaining open spots.

ANYTHING ELSE?

Probably! Please feel free to reach out to us anytime if you have any questions; we’ll be happy to help.
